World's Tallest Dog situate Tall with Three Legs

Gibson, the Guinness Book of World Records-certified world’s tallest dog, has lost a leg to bone cancer. A frequent visitor to Auburn for events like the much-missed Friends of Placer County Animal Shelter’s Doggie Derby, the lanky Great Dane underwent surgery this past week to amputate his right front leg. Veterinarians say dogs can recover from removal of a leg and can adapt to the loss of a limb.

Gibson is a qualified therapy dog and does work with special needs training. He has worked with cancer patients, veterans and amputees. Standing at 42.2 inches tall, Gibson is a Harlequin Great Dane and has held the Guinness World Records' Tallest Dog title for four years. He has made appearances on nationally televised shows, such as the "Oprah Winfrey Show" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

Gibson is a loving, gentle dog who provides joy to those who meet him. The loss of his leg will not slow him down. His ability to uphold his world title will continue to put smiles on people's faces and uplift the spirit of those who are survivors of bone cancer, said Sandy Hall, Gibson's owner.
