Liebler family aims to set world record for longest lemonade stand

They could have gone for the biggest muffin or largest slice of pizza.

Instead, the Liebler family decided they want to build the world’s longest lemonade stand. But they’ll need some help.

“We submitted an application to the Guinness World Book of Records and they accepted our proposal,” Pat Liebler said. “They get something like 60,000 requests a year and only process a handful, so this is a great opportunity. I guess nobody ever tried it before.”

The Beverly Hills family wants the stand in place by Aug. 20, 2011 — which just happens to be National Lemonade Day — giving themselves a year to squeeze out all the details.

They decided to set a record after brainstorming ways to raise money for extracurricular programs at Beverly Elementary School, where several of the Liebler kids attend. School officials are excited about the idea and have agreed to participate.

“Lemonade stands are the first business concept for most children ... it’s something they get,” Liebler said. “You could even turn this into a learning tool for classrooms in terms of marketing, how to purchase supplies — even knowing how to keep your ice from melting on a really hot day.”

He envisions building the stand at Beverly Park in five-foot sections. Each section will have a hinged arm connecting it to the next section. Different groups can sponsor each section, from scouting troops to local businesses.

“The whole thing has to act as a lemonade stand for a short period of time,” he said. “Even 10 minutes will accomplish the goal.”
