The previous Guinness world record for the greatest number of descents made is 39,000 by Don Kellner (USA).

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most simultaneous games of parachute at one venue: 58, played by a total of 1,547 participants in an attempt organised by Plymstock School, Plymouth, Devon, United Kingdom.

Family and friends came from as far as Wisconsin to take part in the occasion at Hazleton Municipal Airport, where Kellner co-owns Above the Poconos Skydivers.

He said he was hooked since his first jump. "The sport started in the US in about 1956 or so and I started jumping in 1961," said Kellner. "After I made my third jump, I said, 'I'm going to do this the rest of my life.'"

Asked why he keeps jumping, Kellner held out his hands to show they were still shaking from adrenaline about a minute after landing another jump, his 40,005th, at the airport.

After all those jumps, does his wife fret for his safety?

"I worry about him more when I can't be up there," Darlene said while watching his chute float down. The Kellners married in midair 21 years ago.
Darlene, an engineer-turned-science teacher who has 15,551 jumps to her credit, uses skydiving video clips to illustrate lessons in her classroom.

How much longer will he continue to skydive?
"Til the last drop," he said.
